Product philosophy

The market for fiber-optic analytical process instruments has been divided into two main product categories: The optical measurement instrument itself, mainly developed for use in scientific laboratories and later modified for at-line deployment and the category of process interfaces, such as measurement probes, flow cells and gas cells. For reasons like the high cost and complexity of optical spectrometers, the requirement of trained scientists to operate them, the challenges of real-time sample presentation and in-process cleaning of the process interface itself, process analytical technology as an integral part of manufacturing processes, has never been able to penetrate the manufacturing industries at large scale.The range of available optical detector modules begins at the UV wavelength range (200nm) covering the visible, NIR and MIR range up to 11 µm. This modular approach allows these process sensors to work in different manufacturing environments, inside and outside, in hazardous or containment areas as well as in compatibility with the mechanical port specifications of most equipment manufacturers for the analyzer to be mounted directly onto the production equipment.

Patended process interface with radial orientation of multiple measurement windows, designed for powders and bulk material. The radial orientation if the measurement windows allows for inline cleaning and recalibration.

Moisture in powders and bulk materials

Water is one of the strongest absorbing compounds in the NIR spectral region and can therefore be measured at very low concentrations. NIR spectroscopy is an efficient alternative to traditional analytical methods such as Karl Fisher (KF) titration for quantifying moisture concentrations. Blue Ocean Nova's moisture sensors are measuring moisture via diffuse reflectance from the powder blend in real-time. The targeted concentration range determines the optical technology in the moisture sensor. In the pharmaceutical industry, the moisture content affects the flow, caking, compaction and strength properties and is usually above 1%. In the chemical industry concentrations of well below 1% are required to maintain the optimal chemical, physical and microbial product properties. Dependent on the target concentration, the sensor utilizes NIR techniques for concentrations down to 1% with +/- 0.3% accuracy, or MIR for concentrations below 1%.

Material properties, such as viscosity, moisture, temperature and pressure, etc., are causing a phenomenon called "window fowling", a buildup of analyte on the probe window. A patented automatic self-cleaning mechanism allows the prevention of "window fowling" without any interruption of the process and thereby allowing the use in continuous manufacturing processes.

Due to the FDA’s PAT initiative, NIR spectroscopy has become the most utilized spectroscopy technique for pharmaceutical manufacturing processes, next to UV and fluorescence based techniques. The applications range from various processing operations of powder mixes, such as blend monitoring for homogeneous mixing of APIs and excipients, drying and granulation, to tablet pressing and measuring of content uniformity of the API in the final tablet. NIR spectroscopy is also used for validation of drug authenticity and verification of dosage concentration. UV spectroscopy is mostly used for cleaning validation (CIP) across virtually all manufacturing industries.

Tri-Clamp is the most ubiquitous connector to connect pipes and equipment components in the Food & Beverage industry as well as in the pharmaceutical industry. It is a quick-release connection and generally available for diameters between ½“ and 4“.

Cleaning Validation (CIP)

The validation of a cleaning process is mandated in virtually any manufacturing process to prevent carryover of material above a predefined acceptable level from one product to another. Typically, samples of the rinse solution, chlorine, caustic clips or acids used for cleaning must be removed from the system and taken to the laboratory for analysis of the residual material in the rinsate. This greatly slows the cleaning process while adding to the laboratory test burden and significant cost increase due to excessive use of solvents.

BON's TRITON products enable the user to detemine in real-time, when the concentration of the analyte reaches this predefined acceptable level and can actively stop the cleaning process, thereby saving signifcant expenses on solvents and increasing the efficiency of the manufacturing equipment.

The chemical, petrochemical and biotech industries are using primarily Swagelok connectors for permanent connections, as oppose to quick-release connectors, such as Tri-Clamp. These connectors are very reliable in high-pressure installations, but still easy to operate. Swagelok connectors are usually available in sizes ranging from 1/16“ to 1“.

A common problem in refineries occurs during the process of fractional distillation when traces of crude oil occasionally spill over into the refined products with adverse consequences for downstream processing equipment. These spillovers manifest in subtle changes in color and turbidity of the refined products and byproducts. The BON Triton product series has been purposely built for process applications like this, including the certifications for hazardous areas.

BON has developed special shafts for ATR probes that are are purpose built for the harsh requirements of rugged environment conditions. Based on ATR or HT-ATR immersion IR-fiber shafts, these can be used for process applications in the NIR & MIR spectral range to monitor reactions inline at temperatures ranging from -100°C to +250°C, with pressure ratings of up to 200 Bar.

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is a crucial process parameter in the processing of oil, natural gas, waste and sewage treatment. As it is poisonous, corrosive and explosive, it is of paramount importance and mandated by regulatory bodies to monitor the concentration levels in real-time during any process.

Blue Ocean Nova's H2S sensor families for liquids (TRITON) and gases (BOREAS) are able to analyze H2S concentrations in water as well as gases in concentrations in the single digit ppm range, using multivariate analysis in the UV and MIR spectral range, combined with patented measurement interfaces to withstand the corrosive nature of the analyte.

This gas cell has been specifically developed for applications in biogas plants. Path length optimization to 200 mm enables continuous inline analysis of methan, H2S and CO2 in realtime. Due to the omnipresence of H2S in biogas, the materials with product contact have to be sufficiently resiliant, to withstand the corrosive nature of H2S.

Without available and appropriate measurement techniques, biogas plants are often run below capacity, in order to avoid instabilities in the fermentation process.

BON’s sensors for biogas are matching the rugged requirements for analytical measurement equipment for inline deployment with regards to gaskets, window material and the robustness of the stainless steel blend used for the probe shafts, which are for ease of maintenance, easily interchangeable.

Photometry and spectroscopy are based on the fact that a portion of the light permeating a sample is being altered by the molecular structrue of the analyte. In the UV spectral range, the intrinsic color of the sample is being used, while molecular vibrations will be analzyed in the NIR or MIR range.

Flange adapter

Ingold-port

The Ingold flange adapter has an external thread for connecting a cap nut of a sensor or valve base. A through hole with a 12 mm diameter is arranged in the transit direction and compatible with the 12 mm shaft of the BON process sensors. Applications can be found primarily in the chemical, pharmaceutical and biotech industries.

DN flange adapter

The arrangement of screw holes in DN flanges always corresponds to a multiple of the 4, with 4 being the minimum. The screw holes should always be symmetrical to the pipes and fittings, they are connecting.

Tri-Clamp

Tri-Clamp or Sanitary Clamp is the most common form of mechanical connections for pipes and fittings in the food & beverage, dairy and life sciences industries. The clamp is designed in a V-profile to ensure a homogeneous surface contact accross the entire diameter.
